Is AI art allowed on DeviantArt? ›

Starting today, deviations created using AI tools will need to be labeled as "Created using AI tools." Additionally, improvements are being made to browse settings, allowing deviants to more precisely control how much AI art they experience while browsing.

The artists in the case allege that the AI software company Midjourney and the online art platform DeviantArt used their art to train a generative image tool, Stable Diffusion, without obtaining permission from the artists or paying them for their work, resulting in unfair marketplace competition.

In January 2023, three prominent illustrators (Sarah Andersen, Kelly McKernan, and Karla Ortiz) filed a copyright-infringement and unfair-competition class-action lawsuit in federal court against DeviantArt, Stability, and Midjourney, whose own app trained on the same database that powers Stable Diffusion.

Coined by researchers from Harvard University, “the paradox of automation,” found that adding more robots to a mid-20th century U.S. factory resulted in higher employment overall, not lower — mainly because the added efficiency freed up workers' to improve products or processes or even create entirely new products.

DeviantArt has since tried to address criticism of its new AI tools. It's set the “noai” flag on by default, so artists have to explicitly signal their agreement to have images scraped. It also updated its terms of service to explicitly order third-party services to respect artists' flags.

Users can generate images with DreamUp and post them on DeviantArt. The #aiart tag will be added automatically. Furthermore, DeviantArt allows uploading AI-generated images from external providers as long as you properly tag your submissions as #aiart.

Content which is inherently disrespectful, aggressive, or otherwise abusive will be removed, as will any post which targets people based on a protected characteristic such as race, ethnicity, national origin, disability, religious affiliation, caste, sexual orientation, sex, gender identity or serious disease.

Artists have secured a small but meaningful win in their lawsuit against generative artificial intelligence art generators in what's considered the leading case over the uncompensated and unauthorized use of billions of images downloaded from the internet to train AI systems.

Over-reliance on AI: Relying too heavily on AI-generated elements can hinder an artist's own creative skills. Artists might become dependent on AI for ideas, stifling their ability to innovate and think critically.
